In everyday life, one might call me a conceptual innovator: For each task I am handed, I want to get it done on the first try. I go into everything I do with a plan — except for my writing. As a writer, my creative process starts when my pen hits the paper (or finger hits the keyboard). I think as I write, and write as I think. There is no plan, except for executing a final product I am pleased with. I will re-type and rewrite and rephrase paragraphs, sentences, and words until they fit together like a puzzle piece. The puzzle is not completed until at least three drafts have been written, edited, written again, and edited again. I like to think of each revision as a type of experiment. Some might think this is “messy” but I see it to be the cleanest form of writing. The more drafts I create and the more revisions I make, the more ideas come to my mind. In my writing, my “genius” doesn’t emerge right away. It takes it’s sweet time.
